The Lunar Society - and its relevance to the modern world
On the 19th September, a talk entitled ‘ The Lunar Society – and its relevance to the modern world’ will be given at Aston University (Room MB108) as part of the British Science Festival programme hosted by the Lunar Society from 18.00 – 20.00
Author Patricia Fara, of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge will provide insights into the Lunar Society's achievements. Patricia recently published a best-selling book, Science: A Four Thousand Year History. The Oxford Press Review commented that ‘In Science, Patricia Fara rewrites science’s past to provide new ways of understanding and questioning our modern technological society’. A regular guest on 'In our Time', she is a leading broadcaster, writer and lecturer on the history of science, medicine and technology. The title of her presentation will be 'LUNAR DREAMS: Power & Progress in Enlightenment Britain'.
Mohamed M El-Gomati, Professor at the University of York, and Deputy Chair of the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, will discuss the comparable challenges from the perspective of the Muslim world. He became a Professor in Electronics at the University of York in 1997 and his research interests are in Surface Science and Electron Optics with particular emphasis on the development of novel instrumentation for nanostructure and analysis. Awarded the Fazlur Rahman Khan Award for Excellence in Engineering, Science and Technology. Professor Mohamed El-Gomati has written more than 180 articles, patents, and books. He has acted as a scientific referee to the British Government and UNESCO.
