A spokesperson for BCU said: "Charles has been associated with Birmingham City University for nearly 10 yedars, having first joined our Board of Governors in April 1998 and becoming Pro-Chancellor and Deputy Chairman four years later. The University could not have wished for a more loyal friend and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his unfailing support and optimism and his exemplary insight and counsel. It gives us great pleasure, therefore, to be able to publicly thank both Charles and his family by holding a celebration of his life . . . Throughout his illness, Charles remained optimistic and lived life to the full, maintaining a committed and keen interest in his life and interests. In accordance with his family's wishes, it is intended that the tribute will reflect this inherent optimism and allow those present to remember Charles with fondness and rejoice in his life and numerous achievements."
