Sir Ralph Kohn Lecture 8th May 2012
On Tuesday 8th May 2012 the Sir Ralph Kohn Lecture will be given by Professor Philip Johnson at the Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI). This is an event led by Birmingham and Midland Institute. Arrival time is 18.30 for a 19.00 start.
The title of Professor Johnson's lecture is ‘Perspectives, Challenges and Opportunities for Cancer Trials in the 21st Century’.
Professor Philip Johnson is Professor of Oncology & Translational Research at the School of Cancer Sciences in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. He has published over 290 research papers in scientific journals as well as nearly 200 reviews and book chapters in the fields of hepatobiliary cancer, clinical trials and biomarkers.
He has led one of the largest cancer trials units in Europe since 2002 and receives major grants from Cancer Research UK and other charitable organisations. Philip works extensively with Cancer Research UK and is Associate Director of the National Cancer Research Network. He lectures nationally and internationally to clinical and scientific audiences as well as interaction with the public and public bodies. He also represents Europe on the Hepatobiliary Task Force of the United States National Cancer Institute and advises several international pharmaceutical companies on clinical trial design and implementation.
Sir Ralph Kohn was elected President of the BMI for the year 2011 at their AGM in January. He obtained his PhD in Pharmacology at Manchester University and subsequently carried out 3 years of postdoctoral research at the Istituto Superior di Sanita, Rome with Sir Ernst Chain FRS, who shared the Nobel Prize for Penicillin with Fleming and Florey in 1945 and Professor Daniel Bovet, the 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine. Sir Ralph also spent a year as a postdoctoral Fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, N.Y. in the Department of Pharmacology with the distinguished pharmacologist Dr Alfred Gilman. After 12 years as senior executive in the international pharmaceutical industry, he established in London the first independent medical research organisation particularly for the clinical evaluation of new drugs. He received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Industry in 1990 and has worked in close collaboration with many well-known international pharmaceutical companies. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Science, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), Honorary Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society, and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2006. He established the Kohn Foundation in 1991 in support of science, medicine, the arts (particularly music) and Humanitarian Aid.
