The making of the Lunar Society Medal
In the autumn of 2005, a competition to design a Lunar Society medal was open to all students at Birmingham's School of Jewellery. Entrants were challenged to produce a design that would identify with the Society's multidisciplinary and cross-boundary ethos. A prize of £500 was offered for a winning design.
A Judging Panel, four members of the Lunar Society plus Greg Fattorini of
Thomas Fattorini Ltd, met in January 2006, and were most impressed by the quality of the entry prototypes and students' background research documentation. They were unanimous in selecting the design produced by
Xianou Ni to receive the Society's award.
Fattorinis then generously offered to work with Xianou Ni to develop her design so that a very high quality medal could be struck. She received her £500 prize at the School of Jewellery End of Year Show on 14 June 2006 from Executive Committee member Kate Cooper.
