Visit to Darwin House, Lichfield; 22nd May 2010
There will be a talk and tour of Erasmus Darwin House and important sites in Lichfield as well as a presentation of the design for a new sculpture of Erasmus Darwin.
Erasmus Darwin was one of the greatest polymaths of the 18th Century. It has been said that no one since has ever rivaled him for achievements in such a wide range of fields. Erasmus settled in Lichfield, Staffordshire and he is responsible for the enlargement of the original house and its noble Palladian frontage on Beacon Street.
A site for the monument to Erasmus Darwin has been determined appropriately in Beacon Park, not more than 100 yards from the museum in the city, which will provide excellent opportunities for the public to engage with it. The sculptor inconjunction with Darwin House have also carried out public workshops relating to the design of the statue and indeed the final design will be revealed some time in early 2010. Currently funding applications relating to the creation of the work in its final monumental form are in place.
