Alderman John Charlton CBE: 2009 Lunar Medal citation
This year's recipient has, over many years, made a very significant
contribution to Civic life in Birmingham, and, in particular, to the
nation's health by his championing of the fluoridation of water, from
which dental health has greatly benefitted. In the last few years, his
leadership at the University Hospital Trust and its successful campaign
for the first new hospital in Birmingham for 70 years, has resulted in
the imposing new building now nearing completion on Metchley Lane,
Edgbaston, and I am sure that this, too, will make a huge difference to
the health of people both in the Midlands and beyond. It is for these
reasons that the Committee had great pleasure in announcing that the
winner of the Lunar Society Madal for 2009 is John Charlton.
