Lunar Society Mailing

Past projects

The Society provides a non-partisan forum for discussions and promotes — sometimes begins — initiatives of civic benefit. Our recent activities include:

Barrow Cadbury Commission on Young Adults and the Criminal Justice System began with the Society hosting a meeting in February 2003 in the aftermath of the shocking drive-by shooting of two young women in the Birchfield area of the city on the previous New Year's Eve. The Report was published in September 2005.

Established in 1995 to satisfy a desire among Birmingham's business leaders to give something back to the community, the Birmingham Foundation provides the vehicle for both companies and individuals to invest in the city's community infrastructure and support its social entrepreneurs in a convenient, tax-effective and rewarding way.

The Society was instrumental in setting up the Birmingham Society of Modern Art. A Gallery of Modern Art now hangs in the Water Hall of Birmingham's Museum and Art Gallery.

Matthew Boulton's elegant home, Soho House in Handsworth, was refurbished with the Society's support. Once the frequent meeting place of the original Lunarmen for their dinner discussions, it now houses a Visitor Centre illustrating those times and their profound influence on the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution.
